Description

We find one of the island’s five castles in the settlement of Oia. It is the Castle of Agios Nikolaos (Kasteli Agiou Nikolaou), as it was called in the Middle Ages. It dates back to around 1480, the time of Venetian domination of the island. The earthquake of 1956 caused such major damage that much of the settlement fell into the sea. Today, a piece of the tower is all that remains, but the spot is lucky enough to be the place with the best view of Santorini's sunset. Every evening hundreds of tourists squeeze into this specially designed space to enjoy the unique spectacle.
